Its reach depends on immense institutions: administrative departments, a Civil Navy, Civil Marines, regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, transportation networks, and technologies capable of crossing the distances between stars. But faster travel does not make civilization simpler. Jurisdictions overlap. Governments compete. Corporations pursue their own interests. Criminal organizations exploit the gaps between systems. Among the people expected to keep that machinery functioning are the agents of the Civil Enforcement Bureau, who investigate serious interstellar crime across the Alyosha expanse.
